To the edge of Amazonia and a brief look at the British and Dutch colonial past in Guyana and Suriname. Still holding on to their fragment of the continent in French Guiana, the horrors of their penal colony are there for the intrepid visitor to see. A long time in the planning and, it seemed, even longer in the air; an epic voyage to South America. Manchester to Dublin to New York to Georgetown to Paramaribo to Kourou then home via Paramaribo, Port of Spain, New York, Dublin to Manchester. Sorry planet Earth, it’s unlikely to happen again.
Just so you know I know: the prison colony on the Îles du Salut (Salvation Islands) – Île Royale, Île Saint Joseph are accessible. The Île du Diable (Devil’s Island) is not. Something to do with dangerous currents, I believe.
